Free, Weekly Drop Off Sites for Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Disposal
DPW offers District residents a free, weekly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and electronic recycling (e-cycling) drop-off service at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station, 3200 Benning Road, NE, and at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station, 4900 Bates Road, NE, each Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm.
Some household products contain strong chemicals that can be flammable, corrosive, or toxic. Used properly, these products pose little threat to the environment or human health. It's when you try to dispose of them that you may be contributing to water pollution, or endangering people and pets. These household hazards should not be discarded in the regular trash, poured down the drain, or onto the ground.
Similarly, many people are unaware that some electronics, especially computers, contain significant amounts of potentially dangerous materials, including lead and mercury.
At the Benning Road and Ft. Totten trash transfer stations, residents can drop off end-of-life consumer electronics, including audio-visual equipment, televisions, cell phones and home office equipment such as computers, computer parts, photocopiers and fax machines. These machines will be broken down into their component parts (plastic, glass, toxic metals) and recycled or disposed of safely.
